“our” referring to myself and my witty and beautiful inside and out friend Caroline. the following is made up of our collective thoughts on a statement made by President Barack Obama at the DNC in 2012. after finishing this little project, I’m feeling so so blessed to have the kind of friend that’s more than happy to share her thoughts! caroline, you’re a rockstar.
“Government is the only thing we all belong to.”
This is a quote than can be credited to the current President of the United States of America, Barack Obama.
So, to the president, the head of this country and leader of the free world, I’d like to say two things: first of all, excuse me? And second, who in the world do you think you are?
Yes, I know this quote is from 2012, and – not to bring up old news or anything – but I think it’s worth noting that this idea of We the People all belonging to our government was an idea used to kick off the DNC when Barack Obama was seeking re-election. It was applauded in agreement by Democrat voters when it was voiced, and I think that’s because it’s been summing up their platform since the very formation of their party.
There are two entities that contradict that belief entirely and they are:
The minute someone, especially any kind of government official, starts trying to convince you that that’s the only entity we, as American citizens/human beings, belong to – it should give pause.
Our nation is so much more than a government – and we as individuals are so much more than a nation. From the beginning we were a beautiful hodge-podge of refugees fleeing their own governments. We identified from the start not as one state-centric entity but rather a society of liberty-minded individuals working for the best life possible.
Through our innate drive for something more, we not only gain a better life for ourselves but for all of those around us. In no other country can someone start with two suitcases and work their way toward a successful career and life. We all have beautiful, unique gifts that set us apart from each other.
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.”
– 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
Human history has taught us that there is a need for people to be governed, but more importantly the Bible teaches us that God is always in control – even of the government we are under.
“There is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
– Romans 13:1b
Although we are called to respect and submit to authority (Mark 12:17), we are also reminded that even the government belongs to the Lord meaning that we all belong first to Him – not to any earthly entity.
In fact, we are called by the Lord to be active in our governing bodies and political processes.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
– Isaiah 9:6
We are called to emanate Christ, and as the “government is on His shoulders” so it must be on ours. While the Lord can have His Will be done through unjust government, we must “do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly” with God (Micah 6:8).
So for President Obama to say that “government is the only thing we all belong to”, he is elevating a central government institution above the King of Kings – which completely violates the Lord’s commandment to walk in humility and honor Him.
The Preamble of the United States Constitution is as follows:
“We the People, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Nowhere in that iconic sentence does it indicate that the purpose of the United States Constitution was to allow the government to control its citizens like they are its property. In fact, our founding fathers fought to avoid being property of an overbearing government.
We are not property of the state. We are independent citizens with the freedom to pursue our American dreams no matter what that means to us. As long as we aren’t harming another person, our opportunities and lives are determined exclusively by our own actions and work. Our founding fathers and thousands of others have fought and died to establish, protect, and preserve the greatest country in the history of the world.
There is no other country in existence that promises the same liberties and opportunities that America does, and we are so close to losing that. When the President of the United States says that the government is the only thing we all belong to, and no one bats an eye, there is a serious problem.
We deserve lives not controlled by the government because the fact of the matter is that the government is not the only thing I belong to – because I don’t belong to them at all.
so in fact, government is actually one of the only things that we all don’t belong to.
we belong completely and exclusively to our Heavenly Father – and no president, tyrant, king, Democrat, or earthly being will ever change that.
and you can tell that, along with keep the change, to President Obama.
